Strokes are a significant cause of mortality and morbidity in South Africa. To combat the effects of stroke, Mediclinic is elevating the standard of stroke care and standardising these new protocols across facilities in South Africa.

“Previously there was very little medical assistance that we could offer stroke patients, except rehabilitation and the control of secondary factors and conditions that could have contributed to the event in the first place,” says Dr Melanie Stander, Emergency Medicine Manager: Mediclinic SA.

“There is now a recognised body of international evidence that demonstrates that patients with strokes who are treated in a standardised and timeous manner with a dedicated multi-professional stroke team have much better outcomes.”

Mediclinic and ER24 are equipped with the expertise to treat and manage stroke patients to ensure optimal outcomes – and you can help. “For stroke patients, time is of the essence” says Dr Stander. “You can give them that by knowing what a stroke looks like, and calling for immediate emergency assistance.”

Remember the acronym FAST, says Dr Stander.

F – Does one side of the face droop? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven or lopsided?

A – Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S – Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence.

T – Time to act. If the person shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms are temporary, call ER24 to get them to a hospital immediately.

If you think someone is having a stroke, don’t delay – call 084 124 for real help, real fast.

Another crucial factor, says Dr Stander, is prevention. “High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol levels, lack of regular exercise – these are all lifestyle factors that could eventually lead to a stroke.”

Know your risk by attending a free screening at your nearest Mediclinic facility.
