12 questions to ask your doctor about breast cancer

You’ve just heard that the biopsy results indicate you have breast cancer. Here’s how to prepare for your next appointment.

Receiving the diagnosis of breast cancer is terrifying. There’s an overwhelming amount of information out there as well as many treatment options. It’s a good idea to take someone (a family member or friend) with you to your appointment for support. You’ll receive a lot of information, so take notes (or ask the person you’ve brought with to take notes). Also, ask for any pamphlets your doctor may have to read later. Remember, you can ask your doctor to simplify anything you don’t understand.

1. What type of cancer do I have? What stage is it?
2. What treatment options are available for me for this stage?
3. What risks, side effects or complications I can expect?
4. How long will the treatment take?
5. What is my prognosis?
6. What medication will I be taking? For how long?
7. Will this treatment cause premature menopause or infertility?
8. How can I expect to feel during treatment?
9. Are these proven or experimental techniques, methods or medications?
10. Are there any changes in diet or lifestyle I should make before, during or after treatment?
11. Will this treatment be covered by my medical aid?
12. Can you recommend someone for a second opinion?

If you walk out with more questions, write those down and save them for your next appointment.
