Good day!

To answer the growing need for same-day surgery, Mediclinic has introduced day clinics into its range of services

Always innovative in the field of healthcare, Mediclinic has expanded its activities by launching day clinics, where the focus is exclusively on same-day surgery. The first two are Mediclinic Durbanville Day Clinic in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, and Mediclinic Limpopo Day Clinic in Polokwane. Plans are for two clinics to be opened each year over the next five years.

What happens in a day clinic?
Patients who are undergoing non-emergency, planned surgical procedures are admitted, have their surgery and are discharged all on the same day. The most common procedures include ear, nose and throat surgery, such as the removal of tonsils (a tonsillectomy); facial and oral surgery, such as wisdom tooth extraction; and investigative procedures such as a gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Because both the patient and the clinic know the date of surgery in advance, preparation is streamlined and thorough. The theatres are fully equipped, with specialised staff, just like in a hospital, and there are dedicated areas where patients can recover before they are safely discharged.

The only difference is time
‘Our focus on “Patients first” continues within these day clinics, where patients receive the same quality care and expertise they are accustomed to from Mediclinic – without wasting unnecessary time,’ says Pieter Lotz, Mediclinic’s Operational Manager: Day Clinics.

‘Doctors are still involved in thorough pre-operative assessments to eliminate risks and complications for the patients during and after medical procedures,’ he says.

Day clinics are conveniently located near the main hospitals. The high quality care that’s expected from Mediclinic is unchanged – just in a streamlined environment.

Pieter continues, ‘We go to great lengths to ensure exceptional care in a nurturing environment. We believe medical procedures needn’t be a stressful experience. Our staff are well trained to take great care of patients attending these specialised facilities.’
