Epilepsy is a brain disorder that can disrupt bodily functions, causing trouble with breathing and an abnormal heartbeat. While epileptics are treated effectively by their GPs, many have gone for years without the specialist care they need, especially in rural areas – until now.

The new Epilepsy Centre at Mediclinic Bloemfontein is called Naledi, or “star” in Southern Sotho.

This dedicated team, trained in the latest epilepsy treatment techniques, aims to bring new light into the lives of its patients. The unit draws on the centre of excellence established by Dr James Butler at Mediclinic Constantiaberg.

It is equipped with a 24-hour video service, which correlates to an electroencephalogram (EEG). The video camera is trained on the patient, while the EEG examines the patient’s brain for abnormal electrical activity.

“By bringing a range of specialists together we are able to offer a comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic service,” says neurologist Dr Rowan Nichol, who was involved in establishing the centre. “Our aim is to ensure our patients are diagnosed correctly and treated appropriately – the Centre equips us to do that.”

This continuous monitoring allows doctors to prescribe a course of treatment quickly and accurately. The centre is also home to two neurosurgeons, for patients who require surgery.
