TRUTH OR TALE NO. 2

If you have heartburn during pregnancy, your newborn will have a full head of hair.
While this claim may sound like an old wives’ tale, there is substantial scientific evidence that it is in fact true.
Researchers at the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore have proven what many a new mother has suspected – there’s a direct link between the unborn baby’s amount of hair and the amount of heartburn the mother experiences while pregnant.
The study, led by Kathleen Costigan of the hospital’s Foetal Assessment Centre, found that increased levels of oestrogen and progesterone, the hormones that are responsible for stimulating foetal hair growth, also relax the oesophageal sphincter.
This relaxation allows stomach acid to back up into the oesophagus, causing gastric reflux, the unpleasant sensation that’s commonly known as heartburn.
