Unlock Your Genetic Profile Today

Posted on 6 March 2023

Mediclinic Precise brings the power of genetic testing and precision medicine to your door. With DNA testing and DNA screening, you now have unprecedented access to a comprehensive understanding of your genetic profile and the potential health risks you may face.

What is a Genetic Profile?

A genetic profile is a comprehensive analysis of your DNA, including your genes, chromosomes, and other genetic material, explains Dr Lindsay Petersen, Chief Operations Officer: Mediclinic Precise. “This information provides insight into your unique genetic makeup, including any inherited diseases or conditions, as well as your risk for developing certain health problems.”

DNA Testing

DNA testing, also known as genetic testing or DNA screening, is a diagnostic tool that analyses an individual’s DNA to determine if they have a genetic disorder or disease. Mediclinic Precise offers three types of DNA tests: ancestry testing, non-invasive prenatal testing, and pharmacogenetic testing.

These tests provide different information and are used for different purposes, says Dr Petersen. Ancestry testing is a type of DNA testing that determines an individual’s ancestry and genetic history, non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is used to determine if a foetus is at risk for a genetic disorder, while pharmacogenetic testing examines an individual’s genetic information to predict how their body will metabolise drugs and predict possible adverse reactions.

What Are the Benefits of Unlocking Your Genetic Profile?

  1. Early Detection and Prevention

One of the most significant benefits of unlocking your genetic profile is the ability to detect genetic disorders and diseases early on. This allows for earlier treatment and intervention, which can greatly improve the outcome of the condition. “For example, if you are found to be at high risk for a certain type of cancer, you can undergo regular screening and take preventative measures to reduce your risk,” explains Dr Petersen.

  1. Personalised Medicine

DNA screening and precision medicine offer an individualised approach to healthcare that considers your unique genetic profile. With this information, doctors can tailor treatments to your specific needs and respond more effectively to your health concerns.

  1. Improved Family Planning

DNA screening can also help with family planning. If a genetic disorder or disease runs in your family, unlocking your genetic profile can help determine if you are a carrier, allowing you to make informed decisions about starting a family.

Mediclinic Precise aims to improve patient outcomes through a more targeted and individualised approach to healthcare, explains Dr Petersen. “Patients can undergo genetic testing to determine their unique genetic profile, which can then be used to inform diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention.”
