Mediclinic Muelmed cochlear procedure a first in SA
Posted on 12 September 2013
A very unique operation took place at Mediclinic Muelmed today. A cochlear implant was done under the lead of Prof Louis Hofmeyr (Specialist in Otology and Neurotology) from Mediclinic Muelmed, and Dr Janet Izeboud from the Ear Institute (Phonak) on a 12 year old girl by using the thinnest, pre-curved array.
This new technology, the HiFocus Mid-Scala Electrode, was introduced world-wide very recently, with today’s procedure being the first in South Africa. The procedure is ideal for patients who still have a bit of hearing, and causes less damage to the Cochlea.
