New hospital to enhance Mediclinic’s services in Kimberley

Posted on 22 February 2013

Mediclinic is proud to announce that building has commenced on its 53rd Southern African hospital, following a ground-breaking ceremony at what will become Mediclinic Gariep in Kimberley on 21 February 2013.

This new 146-bed multidisciplinary hospital enhances Mediclinic’s acute-care offering in the town, and complements those services currently offered at the recently upgraded Mediclinic Kimberley. The R260-million project encompasses a world-class surgical complex with five theatres – including two sophisticated multimedia theatres – and a dedicated endoscopy suite. Other specialised services will include an emergency centre, high care and critical care units and a radiography department.

“We have identified the south-western suburbs as a vital growth node in Kimberley, and in order to better serve this emerging community we took the decision to build a new hospital in El Toro Park. Its proximity to the R31 and the N8 makes it accessible to areas beyond the borders of the municipality,” says Frikkie Burger, Mediclinic Regional Chief Operating Officer: Central Region.

The hospital has been designed to incorporate features in line with Mediclinic’s commitment to sustainable development and good corporate citizenship. These include solar water heating, heat pumps to centralise ventilation, shading louvres for windows, low-emission glazing, insulated walls and roof and a water-wise garden with indigenous veld and protected trees.

The building contract was awarded to Tronkon Construction, which took possession of the site on 7 January, 2013. In support of Mediclinic’s commitment to nurturing relationships within the communities in which it operates, Tronkon will utilise local subcontractors as far as possible and contribute to new job opportunities within the area. The earthworks and civil contracts have already been awarded, and the intention is that other discretionary contracts will also be awarded to local suppliers.

Kimberley is well known in the building industry for its high standard of artisans and quality workmanship which will ensure that the new hospital conforms to the standards of excellence required by Mediclinic. The planned date for completion of the hospital is 21 July 2014.
